Magazine Layout

GRA-340 at Southern New Hampshire University

Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
I created these spreads using Photoshop for image editing and InDesign for text layout. My working knowledge of graphic design software is evident in my work, which demonstrates a complex understanding of the use of grids for organization and a sophisticated application of the principles of typography, such as leading, kerning tracking, etc., to achieve a visually appealing design without compromising readability.

Elements of Design
My designs feature an attractive, high-resolution image and eye-catching fonts that work together toward a harmonious and cohesive design. The focal point of each hero image helps create directional forces by pointing upward and leading the eye toward the top of the second page. I achieved balance on each page by arranging the design elements using a layout grid. I achieved hierarchy, and emphasis through typographic variety. I strategically aligned the text along the gutter, creating straight inner edges and ragged outer edges harmoniously trailing down, contributing to a horizontally balanced design.

Creative Self-Expression and Originality
This project was an offshoot of the first two-page magazine spread I designed in GRA-340. Therefore, I was able to bypass some steps of the ideation process and focus on searching for new typefaces and images that would appeal to a younger target audience. Again, I spent a considerable amount of time designing several roughs featuring various stock photos. Exploring different design options before committing to a color palette or font combinations allowed me to approach my project with unconstrained creativity.

Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
I received valuable feedback from two of my family members, ages 14 and 39. Their insights helped me fine-tune my design choices in order to better connect with my target audience through my choice of fonts and compelling imagery featuring an evident focal point.

Evidence of Following Directions
I adhered to all directions and assignment specifications when designing the first version of the two-page magazine spread but had to deviate from some of the initial project requirements. For example, as with the first design, I adhered to the software, color mode, and format requirements. However, in the course where this project originated, I was required to design two layouts for the same audience; however, when reconsidering this work for inclusion in my portfolio, I wanted to create a new design for a younger target audience featuring bolder typography choices and text layout options as opposed to the more mature and reserved design choices in my first magazine spread. Based on my new audience, I prioritized creating graphic resonance by overlapping the body copy with the background for a modern, youthful, and airy layout over designing for optimal readability.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
My final design shows great attention to detail. I used a grid system to structure my layout and effectively organize and align my design components. My final design is balanced and aesthetically pleasing. I used an appropriate high-resolution image and adapted it to my layout by extending its edges using Photoshop’s AI generative fill tool. I chose fonts that would resonate with the target audience. I mitigated some readability issues by blurring out part of the background and dimming the bright stars using the clone tool. Finally, I converted my final design to the correct format before submitting it for grading.
