Flyers
Project created for GRA-290 at Southern New Hampshire University
Case Study
Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
I designed these flyers using Illustrator and Photoshop. This project demonstrates my ability to use desktop publishing software effectively for creating documents that reflect relevant elements and principles of design for print. I used Photoshop to edit and expand stock images using AI generative fill and Illustrator to tie my assets together into a cohesive final product. This project also demonstrates that I can manipulate Illustrator’s typesetting features to format and manipulate text.
Elements of Design
The flyer I have created in this course demonstrates that I can effectively use elements and principles of design to produce print materials that are informative, visually pleasing, and appropriate for the target audience. For example, I established a typographic hierarchy by varying the font style, size, color, opacity, and saturation. I created a balanced layout by counterweighing graphic elements with blocks of text. I created movement by taking advantage of the natural leading lines captured in the background photographs. I also created a sense of unity and consistency throughout my design through repetition of fonts and graphic elements.
Creative Self-Expression and Originality
As this project was created for the Mexican community, I had to do some research to ensure my design is culturally appropriate and meets the audience’s needs, preferences, and values. The planning phase of this project consisted of mind-mapping and searching for color and design inspiration. Subsequently, I created a mood board that served as an anchor throughout my project. The mood board helped me stay consistent throughout the creative process and allowed my client (class instructor) see my design process.
Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
I received valuable feedback from my professor and peers in the class where this project originated. As I had created several different layout options for this project, my instructor’s expertise was especially helpful in guiding me toward the strongest composition at the time. I took the opportunity to further develop my initial design in my portfolio class, where I received more constructive feedback that I was able to apply in order to improve my final design piece.
Evidence of Following Directions
I adhered to all directions and assignment specifications given for this project. My final product was designed using appropriate fonts, color palettes, and graphics that align with my client’s needs and are appropriate for the target audience. Additionally, each deliverable was developed to the correct size and submitted in a print-ready format per the final project submission guidelines. In reconsidering this work for inclusion in my portfolio, I did not see the need to deviate from the original directions or change the intent of the work. However, I deemed it necessary to make design changes to reflect my improving design skills. Nonetheless, the final result complies with the project’s initial scope of work.
Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
My craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in my final design piece. I used responsibly sourced high-resolution stock photography and a cohesive and appropriate color palette. I researched the specifics of my audience and developed a culturally sensitive and inclusive design. I paid particular attention to legibility and addressed problem areas where the background impacted visibility. I used layout guides to ensure proper alignment on the page. Finally, I submitted my work in the required format and size.
