Client
Pasta Amore
Deliverables
Table tent, Menu design, Brochure
Tools
InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator.
Project Overview
My client intended to open an Italian restaurant and needed various materials to promote it. I was tasked with creating a table tent, menu design, and brochure, using elements and specifications from the Brand Style Guide the client provided.
I ensured that key design elements were carried from one piece to the next to create cohesiveness and effectively communicate the intended message to the target audience.

Case Study
Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
I have created this design system (menu, brochure, and table tent) using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. This project demonstrates my ability to use desktop publishing software effectively for creating multipage documents that reflect relevant elements and principles of design for print. I produced cohesive visual results using InDesign to combine text, vector artwork, and images I edited or created in Photoshop and Illustrator. For example, my brochure features a composite image I created by combining photographic elements I extracted from a stock image using Photoshop. Additionally, I enhanced the menu design with vector illustrations I produced using Illustrator. This project also demonstrates that I can manipulate InDesign’s professional typesetting features to format text consistently across pages.
Elements of Design
The print materials I have created for Pasta Amore demonstrate that I can effectively use elements and principles of design to create a cohesive system of design pieces that share a common theme, follow established guidelines, and effectively tie into the client’s brand identity. I created unity through the consistent use of brand colors, approved fonts, and repetitive use of graphics and photographic elements in each design piece. I set up the menu items in a logical order and grouped them using the principles of proximity and isolation. I used lines and negative space to organize content. I achieved a hierarchy of my typographic content by varying the font style, size, color, and direction of text. I also strategically placed simple vector illustrations to introduce variety to an otherwise monotone and text-heavy layout.
Creative Self-Expression and Originality
I committed substantial time and effort to ideation during the development phase of this design series. Access to the client’s design brief allowed me to identify the client’s needs and pain points, as well as gain an understanding of the client’s target audience and potential competition. After the initial research stage, I began brainstorming through mind mapping before searching for visual inspiration and creating a mood board that was informed by the design brief specifications. While design thinking is an iterative and non-linear process, mind mapping and brainstorming for inspiration gave my project direction and allowed me to narrow down abstract ideas into executable design concepts. As a result, I have created a series of printing materials that effectively align with the client’s vision and mission statement.
Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
I benefitted from thoughtful feedback from my instructor and peers during the course where this project originated. According to the general consensus, my designs demonstrate effective use of textures, colors, lines, and shapes. In my portfolio class, two students agreed that an element I used on the table tent design seemed out of place, which was a valid point that I addressed in my final piece. Additionally, I decided to enhance each design piece by adding information such as contact details (web address, phone number) on the brochure, hours of operation on the menu, and a menu QR code on the table tent.
Evidence of Following Directions
I adhered to all of this project's directions and assignment specifications. My final product was designed using appropriate fonts, color palettes, and graphics that align with my client's needs and suit the target audience. Additionally, each deliverable was developed to the correct size and submitted in a print-ready format per the final project submission guidelines.
Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
The printing materials I designed for Pasta Amore show evidence of craftsmanship and attention to detail. I used responsibly sourced high-resolution stock photography, appropriate and consistent color palettes, and typeface combinations across each design piece. I addressed readability issues by selecting optimal font sizes and ensuring optimal contrast with the background.
